Grand Theft Auto 6 might still be six months away, but fans of the GTA Online mode think we could be about to get a crossover event ahead of the game's full release.

In a blog post teasing a bunch of updates for GTA Online, the developer dropped a cryptic tease at the very end.

"There's also plenty more to look forward to in GTA Online, including a variety of special events and celebrations, along with an exciting new update this summer," the post reads.

It's that 'exciting new update this summer' that's got fans reeling, especially with how vague the wording of it seems to be.

Some fans reckon that this could be the beginning of the end for GTA Online with an online mode for GTA 6 suspected to take over the reins shortly after launch.

"After 13 years and almost 50 content updates, the end is almost here," one X user writes. "Hopefully they send this game off with a bang."

Other players refuse to believe that Rockstar would kill off GTA Online so soon after the release of GTA 6. "I can't imagine it will be the last. GTA 6 isn't coming to PC right away and GTA Online is still a complete cash cow, and is always drawing in new players. No company in their right mind kills a cash cow," reads one Reddit comment.

From what we know, it sounds like that Redditor has the right idea. Rockstar is yet to announce an online mode for GTA 6 officially, so we don't know how long after launch that might arrive.

In fact, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive - the publisher of the GTA games - has said that Rockstar will continue to support GTA Online after the release of GTA 6. That's according to a report from Rockstar Intel.

Given how much money GTA Online makes for Rockstar Games, this makes sense. A leak earlier in the year revealed that the online mode continues to bring in over $1.3m per day, with the vast majority of that coming from PS5 players.

Still, it would make sense that Rockstar starts to lay a few teasing seeds for GTA 6 in its biggest live service game during the run-up to launch. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has promised that a marketing push for GTA 6 will begin during the summer - could this mysterious event be part of those efforts?

For now, we'll have to wait to learn more.
