Meta has gone all-in on artificial intelligence, and its chatbot, Meta AI , is now deeply embedded into your favorite social apps-WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. Rolled out in early 2023, Meta AI was introduced as a smart assistant to help you get things done faster. But while the company is bullish on AI's future, not all users are thrilled with this sudden, ever-present digital companion.

What Is Meta AI and Why Are Some Users Concerned?

Meta AI is an artificial intelligence chatbot built on the company’s Llama 3 language model. It was designed to compete with other popular AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude. Unlike those, however, Meta AI isn’t a separate app you visit-it’s baked directly into the apps you use every day.

The integration means you can summon Meta AI in the middle of a WhatsApp chat, while browsing Facebook, or scrolling through Instagram. But that convenience comes with concerns.

In June, Meta AI ran into trouble when its “Discover” feed began exposing personal interactions users had with the chatbot on social media handles. While Meta addressed the issue, it left a sour taste for many users already skeptical about how much data the AI had access to.

Can You Turn Off Meta AI?

Unfortunately, no. Meta doesn’t allow users to fully remove or disable the chatbot from its apps. However, you can limit your exposure by muting or hiding interactions. Here's how you can do that on each platform:

How to Mute Meta AI on Instagram

  • Open your Chats tab.

  • Search for Meta AI.

  • Tap the ‘i’ icon at the top-right.

  • Choose Mute → Select “Until I change it.”

This prevents the chatbot from sending push notifications or interrupting conversations.

How to Silence Meta AI on WhatsApp

  • Open the Meta AI chat.

  • Tap the three-dot menu and choose Mute Notifications.

  • Select Always to stop alerts.

For Group Chats

Go to Group Settings → Enable Advanced Chat Privacy.
Note: This hides AI prompts but also stops users from saving media in the chat.

Reducing Meta AI on Facebook

  • Open Messenger, find the Meta AI chat.

  • Tap on the ‘i’ icon → Mute the conversation.

For fewer AI features overall, use Facebook’s basic mobile version, which offers a stripped-down experience with minimal AI prompts.

Meta AI is here to stay-at least for now. Though the company promotes it as a helpful tool, many users are wary of its reach and data handling. While you can’t remove Meta AI completely, these simple tweaks can give you more control over your privacy and help reduce unnecessary AI noise in your daily social media use.

If you're one of the many looking to draw a line between yourself and the ever-expanding AI world, muting Meta AI is a good place to start.
