Meta, the tech company led by Mark Zuckerberg, has introduced a new generative AI-powered video editing feature that allows users to transform short-form videos using a wide range of preset AI prompts. This new functionality is currently available through the Meta AI app, the Meta.AI website, and the Edits app.
In an official blog post, Meta stated that users can now edit videos effortlessly by choosing from a variety of preset prompts to modify elements such as outfits, styles, locations, and more. This tool, currently accessible in the United States and 12 other countries, is based on Meta’s Movie Gen models—advanced generative AI technologies developed to enhance multimedia content creation.
Looking ahead, Meta announced that later this year users will also be able to edit videos by entering their own custom text prompts, allowing for more personalized and imaginative edits.
The new video editing feature is designed to be user-friendly and does not require any prior editing expertise. To get started, users simply need to upload a video to any of the supported platforms—Meta AI app, Meta.AI website, or Edits app—and choose from over 50 editing prompts. Each prompt can transform up to 10 seconds of footage.
Once a prompt is selected, Meta AI automatically edits the video to match the chosen style. For instance, users can convert their video into a graphic novel, reimagine themselves as a vintage comic book character, or transform the clip into a video game-inspired scene complete with battle attire. Additionally, visual effects such as dreamy lighting, pearlescent blur, and soft focus can be applied to enhance mood and atmosphere.
Videos edited through the Meta AI or Edits app can be quickly shared on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Users on the Meta AI app and website can also post their creations directly to the Discover feed.
Meta’s advancements in AI video generation stem from years of research and development. In 2022, the company introduced its Make-A-Scene models, capable of generating images, audio, video, and 3D animation. In 2023, it followed up with the Llama Image foundation models, which further improved image and video generation quality. By 2024, these innovations were integrated into Movie Gen—a sophisticated AI model that supports custom video and sound production, along with AI-powered editing through text input.
With this new video editing feature, Meta continues to expand its suite of AI tools, making creative content generation more accessible and intuitive for everyday users.
