If you're planning late-night digital transactions on August 6, take note-State Bank of India (SBI) has announced a short, scheduled maintenance window during which its UPI services will be temporarily unavailable.

SBI UPI Services Down for 20 Minutes

In an official update, SBI stated that its UPI services will be down for 20 minutes-from 1:00 AM to 1:20 AM (IST) on Wednesday, August 6, 2025. The brief disruption is part of routine maintenance work aimed at ensuring smoother operations going forward.

But there's no need to panic-UPI Lite will remain fully operational during this period.

What Is UPI Lite ?

UPI Lite is a simplified version of the regular UPI system. It lets users make small-value payments without depending on real-time bank processing, making it ideal for everyday expenses like snacks, bus fares, or minor retail buys.

It works like a digital wallet that doesn’t require a PIN for each transaction-just a single tap and go.

Key Features and Limits of UPI Lite

  • New per-transaction limit: ₹1,000

  • Overall wallet cap: ₹5,000

  • Updated by RBI in December 2024

  • Fast, PIN-free payments for low-ticket transactions

The balance in your UPI Lite account is treated like cash, so handle it responsibly. Also, if you switch phones, remember to disable UPI Lite on the old device and re-enable it on the new one.

How to Enable UPI Lite for SBI Users

Want to use UPI Lite during the maintenance window? Here's a quick guide to activate it:

  • Open your UPI app (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, etc.)

  • Tap on the option to enable UPI Lite on the home screen

  • Accept the terms and conditions

  • Choose your SBI account and enter the amount to load

  • Enter your UPI PIN
And you’re good to go-UPI Lite will be enabled instantly!

Benefits of UPI Lite

  • Always available, even during bank downtimes

  • No UPI PIN needed for small-value transactions

  • Faster checkouts for low-cost purchases

  • Easy to track expenses

  • Safer to use in crowded or public places

You can top up your UPI Lite wallet anytime directly through your UPI app. Just select the option to “Add Funds” and enter the amount you want to load.

Though SBI’s main UPI services will take a short break in the early hours of August 6, customers needn’t worry. With UPI Lite as a backup, digital payments can continue without interruption. It’s a handy feature to activate if you often make small, everyday transactions.
