WhatsApp is set to make scanning and sharing documents even easier with a new in-app document scanner, currently in development for Android. Originally spotted in the iOS version, this practical feature will soon be available to a wider user base, eliminating the need for third-party scanning apps.
The scanner will be seamlessly integrated into WhatsApp’s document-sharing menu, allowing users to capture physical documents using their phone’s camera and send them directly in chats.
Manual or Automatic? You Get Both
The upcoming feature offers two convenient scanning modes: manual and automatic.
Manual mode allows users to frame and capture documents at their own pace — perfect for when precision is needed.
On the other hand, automatic mode detects document edges and snaps the photo automatically, making it ideal for quick scans on-the-go.
Instant PDF Conversion & Easy Sharing
Once scanned, documents will be immediately converted into PDFs — no extra steps required.
These PDF files can then be shared with contacts or groups right from the chat window.
Importantly, the entire process is handled locally using Android’s native APIs, meaning your files stay on your device unless you choose to send them.
Privacy Comes Standard
As with all WhatsApp messages, scanned documents will be end-to-end encrypted, ensuring your information remains private and secure.
Only you and the recipients of your message will be able to access the scanned file.
This new feature reaffirms WhatsApp’s commitment to both functionality and user privacy.
When Can You Use It?
The feature is currently under development and is expected to roll out in a future update for Android devices.
With this addition, WhatsApp aims to offer a native alternative to scanning apps, streamlining how users share important documents — all without leaving the app.
Soon, scanning paperwork with your phone will be as easy as sending a message.
