WhatsApp, the widely-used instant messaging platform owned by Meta, is now testing a new AI-powered feature aimed at enhancing user experience by summarizing unread messages. With over a billion users globally, WhatsApp continues to introduce innovations to maintain its status as the leading messaging application.
According to a report from WABetaInfo — a reliable source for upcoming WhatsApp features — the new functionality is being rolled out for select users via the WhatsApp beta for Android, version 2.25.18.18, available on the Google Play Store.
The AI-generated summaries are designed to help users quickly review unread messages in both individual and group chats. These summaries are created with privacy as a core principle. The report highlights that all messages remain protected, and the summarization process does not compromise user confidentiality.
Beta testers can enable this feature by activating Private Processing from within the app’s settings. Once activated, a new button appears when users receive a significant number of unread messages. Tapping this button triggers a request to the Private Processing system, which then returns a concise summary of the unread messages. Importantly, this system operates without storing any data, ensuring full user privacy.
Private Processing functions similarly to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, processing user data securely without transmitting it to WhatsApp or Meta servers. Developers emphasize that neither Meta nor any external party can access the data, and all user requests are anonymized and cannot be linked to personal identities.
The AI-based message summary feature is completely optional. Users who are concerned about data privacy can choose not to enable it, preserving their standard chat experience.
In addition to message summarization , WhatsApp is also developing another AI-based tool called Writing Help. This feature will allow users to rewrite or rephrase their messages, offering options to adjust tone and improve clarity.
These developments are part of WhatsApp's broader efforts to integrate AI tools responsibly while prioritizing user privacy and control.
