WhatsApp Launches New 'Schedule Calls' Feature to Compete with Video Conferencing Platforms

WhatsApp has rolled out a new ‘Schedule Calls’ feature, allowing users to plan calls in advance on the platform. This update is applicable to both group and one-on-one conversations. Participants in a scheduled group call will receive notifications when the call is about to begin, ensuring they don’t miss important discussions.
The feature will be made available gradually to users worldwide. Scheduled calls on WhatsApp will also maintain end-to-end encryption , keeping user privacy intact. This addition not only fulfils a long-standing user request but also places WhatsApp in more direct competition with video conferencing platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams.
Along with scheduled calls, WhatsApp is introducing interactive call tools, including the ability to raise a hand or react with an emoji during calls. The app has also made design changes to the Calls tab, where users can now view upcoming calls, check the list of participants, and share links to invite others. Users who schedule calls in advance will receive notifications when someone joins via a shared link.
Recently, WhatsApp has also been testing an AI-powered ‘Writing Help’ feature in beta. This tool assists users with grammar corrections, phrasing suggestions, and tone adjustments before sending messages. It is currently available for Android beta users and powered by private on-device processing technology.
Additionally, WhatsApp plans to introduce ads within the Status feature later this year. These sponsored ads will appear only in the ‘Updates’ tab, without interfering with personal chats or calls.
With these updates, WhatsApp is enhancing its role not just as a messaging app but also as a professional communication platform, aiming to provide more seamless and user-friendly tools for both personal and work-related interactions.
