WhatsApp New Feature: See How Many People Are Typing In Group Chats – Coming Soon

WhatsApp is adding a new layer of transparency to its bustling group chats. In its latest beta update for Android (version 2.25.20.17), the app has introduced a feature that shows how many people are currently typing in a group. This means you’ll no longer see just a single name typing — instead, WhatsApp will tell you if two, three, or even more members are composing messages at the same time.
A Small Change, Big Difference
Previously, WhatsApp only displayed one participant’s name followed by “typing…” in group chats, even when multiple people were replying. Now, a dynamic message like “2 people typing” will appear. This update aims to make group conversations feel more real-time and interactive, especially in busy groups where replies can come fast and furious.
Group Chats Get Smarter
It’s important to note that this feature is limited to group chats. In one-on-one conversations, you’ll still see just the standard “typing…” notification. In groups, however, this small tweak helps users know when more activity is brewing, so they can jump in or stay tuned for multiple replies.
Voice Messages Remain Unchanged
Interestingly, the update doesn’t extend to voice message recordings. If two or more people start recording voice notes simultaneously, WhatsApp will still only show one name in the chat list, just as it did before. So, the multi-typing indicator is specifically focused on text replies in group chats.
Rolling Out to Beta Testers First
For now, the feature is only visible to select beta testers who have updated to the latest WhatsApp beta version via the Google Play Beta Programme. WhatsApp plans to expand the rollout gradually in the coming weeks, as part of its broader effort to enhance user experience and make active group chats more transparent.
Why It Matters
In large or highly active groups, knowing how many people are typing can help users decide when to check the chat or anticipate lively discussions. This small addition could make group chats feel less chaotic and more engaging.
As WhatsApp continues refining its group chat features, users can look forward to an even more interactive messaging experience.
