WhatsApp is all set to enhance its in-app camera experience and user profile customization. The messaging giant is reportedly testing two exciting features-one to help capture better photos in low light, and another to allow users to import profile pictures directly from Instagram or Facebook. Both features are currently being tested in the Android beta version and are expected to roll out to all users soon.

Camera Gets Smarter with Night Mode

According to a report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is experimenting with a new night mode feature to help users take clearer and more detailed images in dark or dim environments. Spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.22.2, the feature adds a moon-shaped icon at the top of the camera screen. Tapping this icon activates the night mode.

Instead of relying on the camera flash or external light, this night mode works through software-based enhancements. It smartly adjusts the image exposure and reduces noise, bringing out finer details in the shadows—ideal for poorly lit conditions. While the improvements may not be drastic in extremely dark settings, the feature still helps elevate photo quality in most low-light scenarios.

Unlike some phone cameras that switch to night mode automatically, WhatsApp’s version requires users to enable it manually. This gives users control over when and where to use it. The feature could come in handy during casual moments when lighting isn’t ideal but you still want a decent shot.

The development follows WhatsApp’s recent camera update, which introduced real-time visual effects. A dedicated filter button now lets users apply fun effects before clicking pictures or recording videos-previously, such filters were only available during video calls.

Profile Picture Sync from Instagram and Facebook

In another update focused on personalization, WhatsApp is reportedly working on a feature that allows users to import their profile pictures directly from Instagram or Facebook.

At present, WhatsApp allows users to update their display picture by either capturing a new one through the app, uploading an image from the gallery, selecting a custom avatar, or generating an AI-based image. The new feature, however, will provide additional options for syncing with Meta-owned platforms.

When the feature rolls out, users will simply need to go to their profile settings and click ‘edit’ on their photo. Alongside the existing choices, they will see new options labeled ‘Instagram’ and ‘Facebook’. Tapping either option will let them import their latest profile picture from the selected platform, streamlining the customization process.

This move is yet another step in integrating Meta’s family of apps more closely, making it easier for users to maintain consistency across platforms without manually uploading the same picture everywhere.

What to Expect Next

Both the night mode camera feature and Instagram/Facebook profile picture sync are currently in the beta phase and being tested by a limited group of users. If the feedback is positive and stable, these features could begin rolling out globally in the coming weeks.

With these updates, WhatsApp continues to evolve beyond messaging-offering smarter tools for photos and deeper integration within the Meta ecosystem.
