Your Instagram Chats Are Now in Hackers' Crosshairs; This Feature Has Been Disabled..

Newspoint

The day has finally arrived when Meta has discontinued support for end-to-end encryption (E2EE) in Instagram messaging. As a reminder, Instagram introduced this feature to the platform in 2023; however, starting May 8, 2026, this feature will no longer be available to users. Simply put, your Instagram chat messages will no longer remain private.

Meta had previously informed Instagram users about this change via a blog post in March. The company stated that if this change affects your chats, you will see instructions on how to download any specific media or messages of your choice. The objective behind this is to enable users to download and back up sensitive chats—which they wish to keep private—after this change goes into effect.

With the discontinuation of end-to-end encryption, anyone with technical expertise could potentially access these messages. This implies that your chats have now become targets for hackers, as the removal of end-to-end encryption has heightened security risks. This change will directly impact Instagram users. Meta has not mentioned whether it plans to implement a similar change for its other applications, such as Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp.

Why did Meta make this change?

A primary reason cited for this change is child safety. In March of this year, a jury in New Mexico ordered Meta to pay $375 million. Removing end-to-end encryption could provide the company with the capability to scan messages when necessary, thereby enabling the detection and flagging of content related to children, grooming, or any other forms of harassment.
