1984 Anti-Sikh Riots: Delhi Court Acquits Ex-Congress MP Sajjan Kumar In Vikaspuri, Janakpuri Case
A Delhi court acquitted former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in a case linked to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in the Janakpuri and Vikaspuri areas, where two people were killed. The Rouse Avenue Court said the prosecution failed to establish Kumar’s role in the violence. Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh orally pronounced the order, noting that there was no evidence directly connecting Kumar to the incident. Kumar had consistently denied involvement during the trial. The case stemmed from two FIRs registered by a special investigation team in 2015 over killings in November 1984. In August 2023, Kumar was charged with rioting and promoting enmity, but discharged of murder and conspiracy charges. Kumar, however, remains in jail after being sentenced to life imprisonment in another 1984 riots case involving killings in Saraswati Vihar and Palam Colony. His appeal against the life term is pending before the Supreme Court.
