Congress Leads Opposition Motion To Remove Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla Amid Parliament Tensions
Parliament is witnessing a rare political moment as the Opposition has moved a resolution to remove Om Birla from the Speaker’s chair in the Lok Sabha. The notice was submitted earlier during the first phase of the Budget Session of the Indian Parliament, carrying the signatures of 118 MPs. Congress MP Mohammad Jawed moved the resolution in the House. The debate has now shifted to procedure, with members discussing who will chair proceedings when the motion is taken up. Congress leader K. C. Venugopal argued that the government has not appointed a Deputy Speaker for years, creating what he called a constitutional gap. The BJP, however, rejected the charge. Senior leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said the Opposition’s objections have no constitutional basis. The issue has triggered a fresh political confrontation inside Parliament.
