Former DG Military Operations Lt Gen A.K. Bhatt has shared fresh insights into the 2017 Doklam crisis, revealing India’s decisive response to Chinese attempts to alter the status quo at the tri-junction. As Chinese troops moved in with bulldozers to construct a road, Indian soldiers stood as a human barrier, while Border Roads Organisation dozers faced off directly against Chinese machines, stopping progress. Bhatt highlighted the strategic risk, explaining that completion of the road would have given China access to Jampheri Ridge, overlooking the Siliguri Corridor. Acting with political clarity, Indian troops crossed into Bhutanese territory to physically block the Chinese, sparking a tense 72-day standoff. He stressed that this unconventional approach reflected India’s resolve to safeguard strategic interests and uphold established norms along Doklam.
