“India Kept Calm Under US Pressure” CSIS Expert Rossow On Trade Pact

Washington DC | CSIS Senior Advisor Richard Rossow said the India-US trade agreement reflects concessions on both sides, with Washington securing greater access to Indian markets through the easing of non-tariff barriers and the rollback of most US tariffs on Indian goods. He said an understanding exists for India to buy USD 500 billion worth of American products, though the scope and timeline of those purchases remain uncertain. On India’s sourcing of Russian oil, Rossow noted that New Delhi has historically adjusted its energy imports when faced with firm US pressure. He added that the United States remains India’s most important export destination, and the trade deal mirrors similar arrangements India has reached with other partners, making it a pact both leaders considered worth concluding.
