India Pushes Urgent Security Council Reform At UN, Says Status Quo Is Fueling Conflict And Misery

India has issued a sharp warning at the United Nations: delaying Security Council reform is no longer just procedural, it is dangerous. Speaking on behalf of the G4 nations — India, Brazil, Germany and Japan — India’s Permanent Representative P. Harish said every delay is adding to human suffering as wars continue unchecked across regions. At the Inter-Governmental Negotiations on UNSC reform, India pushed for early action, text-based negotiations, and a clear roadmap. The G4 proposal calls for expanding the Council from 15 to 25 or 26 members, including six new permanent seats that reflect today’s geopolitical realities. Two permanent seats would go to Africa, two to Asia-Pacific, and one each to Latin America and Western Europe. India also called out procedural blockers who oppose reform while claiming to support justice for Africa. New Delhi made it clear: the UN’s credibility is at stake, and reform can no longer be postponed.TOI Bharat delivers the latest news, biggest voices, sharpest views and in-depth coverage of India’s political, social and economic landscape.
