Post-Operation Sindoor, India Formalises Its Military Transformation Blueprint With Vision 2047

India has released the Defence Forces Vision 2047, the most ambitious military transformation blueprint since Independence. Prepared by Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, the document charts how India intends to build a globally respected, technologically advanced and combat-ready military by the centenary of Independence. It is structured around four core pillars: jointness and synergy across the three services, advanced technology integration including AI, cyber, space and autonomous systems, Aatmanirbharta through indigenous defence manufacturing, and a whole-of-nation approach that integrates military strength with diplomatic and economic power. The timing is deliberate; the document arrives eight months after Operation Sindoor, the May 2025 military conflict with Pakistan, following which all three services were tasked with incorporating combat lessons into long-range planning. Several building blocks are already in motion: eight integration verticals covering 196 specific tasks have been identified, joint doctrines issued, and a cyber operations doctrine released last year. The roadmap is structured across short-, mid-, and long-term timelines. Near-term goals cover communications, air defence and ISR improvements, while longer-horizon goals target space warfare, quantum technologies and lethal autonomous systems.
