Union Minister Vaishnaw Details India’s Measures To Handle Deepfake Threats

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, cautioned against the misuse of artificial intelligence, highlighting threats from misinformation, disinformation, and deepfakes. Speaking at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, he stressed the need for robust legislative and technical safeguards to protect social trust, governance, and human creativity. Vaishnaw outlined plans for mandatory watermarking and labelling of AI-generated content and said India is collaborating with ministers from over 30 countries to develop global solutions. He urged technology creators, platforms, and governments to ensure AI strengthens societal trust rather than undermining it, balancing innovation with accountability and safety.
