Bangladesh Forms Committee to Investigate T20 World Cup Withdrawal
On Monday, a senior official announced that Bangladesh has set up a three-member committee to investigate the decision to withdraw from the T20 World Cup. Mahbub Ul Alam, Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, confirmed this over the phone, stating, "The Ministry has formed a committee to review the reasons behind Bangladesh's absence from the recent T20 World Cup held in India."
Dr. AKM Oli Ullah, the Additional Secretary of the Administration Wing at the Ministry, will lead the committee. The team also includes Habibul Bashar Sumon, a former national captain and chief selector of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), along with Barrister Faisal Dastagir, a Supreme Court lawyer and sports organizer. The committee is tasked with investigating the rationale behind the withdrawal and assessing any potential diplomatic or strategic missteps. They are expected to deliver a detailed report to the Ministry within 15 working days.
Context of the Withdrawal
Prior to the 2026 T20 World Cup, the BCB expressed 'security concerns' and requested that their matches be relocated from India to Sri Lanka. However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) did not accommodate this request from the then Interim Government of Bangladesh.
As a result of the BCB's refusal to participate according to the match schedule, the ICC replaced Bangladesh with Scotland in the Men's T20 World Cup 2026. The ICC dismissed the BCB's demands, citing a lack of credible security threats to the Bangladesh national team in India.
The tournament, featuring 20 teams, took place from February 7 to March 8. Following Aminul Haque's appointment as Minister for Youth and Sports, a formal inquiry was promised to ensure accountability for this unprecedented withdrawal.
