HMRC issues one-week deadline to taxpayers - 'check here'
HMRC has advised Brits there is just one week left to register for self-assessment. HM Revenue & Customs took to social media platform X to announce the deadline for anyone completing a tax return for the first time.
The tweet posted on Sunday included a link for those who want to check if they need to send a self-assessment tax return for the 2024-25 tax year. This runs from April 6, 2024, to April 5 this year. HMRC's tweet read: "There's just one week to go to register for self-assessment if you're completing a tax return for the first time".
The Government uses self-assessment to collect income tax. Usually, tax is deducted automatically from wages and pensions, but people and businesses with other incomes have to report it via a self-assessment tax return.
If you need to send a self-assessment tax return, you should fill it in after the end of the tax year to which it applies.
You also have to send a return if HMRC requests it. Failing to file a return and pay on time may result in a fine and interest being added.
Self-assessment tax returns can be filed online or on paper, using the SA1000 form. Copies can be downloaded from the Government's website or arranged by calling HMRC on 0300 200 3610.
HMRC calculates the amount of tax you owe based on what you tell them, sends you a bill and expects payment by January 31. The amount of tax you pay depends on the income tax band you fall into.
Tax returns have to be sent by sole traders who earn more than £1,000; you were a partner in a business partnership; paid Capital Gains Tax when you sold something which increased in value or had to pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge (and don't pay it via PAYE).
You might also have to send a tax return if you have untaxed income such as money from renting out a property, tips, commission, income from dividends, investments, savings or foreign income.
Returns can also apply to those who claim certain income tax reliefs or want to prove they are self-employed to claim maternity allowance or tax-free childcare. A tax return can also be used to pay voluntary National Insurance contributions.
