IPL 2026 Retentions: Why CSK Released Dhoni's Trusted Pacer Matheesha Pathirana
In a surprising move ahead of the IPL 2026 retention deadline, Chennai Super Kings have released Matheesha Pathirana — the young Sri Lankan fast bowler known for his unique slinging action. Considered one of MS Dhoni’s favourites and a trusted death-overs specialist, Pathirana’s exclusion has shocked fans, especially since CSK had retained him for ₹13 crore last season. While the team’s decision to trade Ravindra Jadeja grabbed attention, Pathirana’s release has become the biggest talking point.
Why Did CSK Drop Pathirana?
Several factors contributed to Pathirana’s exit, and CSK head coach Stephen Fleming had already hinted at the reasons. According to him, the franchise was concerned about Pathirana’s diminishing effectiveness and inconsistent form. During the previous season, Pathirana altered his bowling release point, which significantly reduced the impact of his yorkers and deceptive pace — the key strengths that made him a threat in the death overs.
His performance also reflected this decline. He took only 13 wickets in 12 matches and conceded more than 10 runs per over. Moreover, the high number of wides he bowled became a regular issue for the team, drawing widespread criticism from analysts and fans.
Injuries Played a Major Role
Another major reason behind CSK’s decision was Pathirana’s frequent injuries. Despite his immense potential, the young pacer has struggled with recurring fitness problems. Even MS Dhoni had earlier advised Sri Lanka Cricket to manage Pathirana carefully to ensure a long and sustainable career.
Over the past few years, he has missed several matches due to injuries, leading to inconsistency in rhythm and form. Considering these concerns, Chennai chose to release him ahead of the 2026 season.
However, the doors are not fully closed. With Pathirana currently valued at ₹13 crore, CSK may attempt to buy him back at a lower price in the upcoming IPL 2026 auction. Securing him for a smaller amount would benefit the franchise significantly.
Another Major Move by CSK
Chennai Super Kings made yet another big decision this season — the trade of Ravindra Jadeja. After 12 years with the franchise, Jadeja has been traded to Rajasthan Royals. In exchange, CSK has brought in Sanju Samson, who is expected to play a key role for the team in the upcoming season.
