Launch of India's First Decaffeinated Black Tea by CSIR-NEIST
Jorhat, Oct 5: The first-ever decaffeinated black tea in India, developed using indigenous technology by scientists at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)-North East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST) in Jorhat, was recently unveiled by Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh.
An official from CSIR-NEIST shared that Dr. Singh, who also serves as the Vice-President of CSIR, introduced the decaffeinated black tea during the two-day ‘CSIR Super Model Store’ event held from September 24-26 at Dilli Haat, Delhi. This event was part of the 84th CSIR Day celebrations, featuring various entrepreneurs and industries utilizing CSIR technologies.
Caffeine, a key component of tea, can lead to issues such as sleep disturbances, anxiety, and cardiovascular problems for some consumers. Therefore, decaffeinated tea, which significantly reduces caffeine while preserving other beneficial polyphenols, is gaining popularity due to its health advantages.
The technology for producing decaffeinated tea developed by CSIR-NEIST is crucial in meeting the rising demand for caffeine-free tea, as noted by the CSIR-NEIST official.
During the same event, the decaffeination technology was officially transferred to two parties in the presence of Dr. Jitendra Singh, Director General of CSIR Dr. N Kalaiselvi, Director of CSIR-NEIST Dr. Virendra M Tiwari, New Delhi MP Bansuri Swaraj, and President of the Indian National Science Academy, Professor Ashotosh Sharma.
The dignitaries expressed their appreciation for the innovative research efforts by CSIR-NEIST.
