Maruti Suzuki Retains Top Spot in September 2025 with Millions of Vehicles Sold, Tata and Mahindra Follow
The Indian passenger vehicle market in September 2025 witnessed notable shifts, with Maruti Suzuki maintaining the number one position despite a slight decline in monthly registrations. The company registered 189,665 units in September, which included a record 42,204 units exported. Domestic sales stood at 135,711 units, reflecting a 6% decrease compared to the previous year, primarily due to a drop in utility vehicle sales. However, strong performance in compact cars like Baleno and Swift helped offset some losses.
Tata Motors surged to second place with 59,667 units sold domestically, marking its best-ever month and a 47% year-on-year growth. The Nexon compact SUV was a key driver, with over 22,500 units registered, alongside a near doubling in electric vehicle sales. This strong performance enabled Tata to overtake Mahindra & Mahindra, who slid to third place with 56,233 vehicles sold, supported by popular SUVs like Scorpio-N, XUV700, and Thar.
Hyundai fell to fourth place in the domestic rankings with 51,547 units sold, despite record SUV sales, including strong results for its Creta and Venue models. Toyota and Kia also reported declines in sales, with Toyota registering 20,051 units and Kia selling 16,540 units in September, both down from the previous month.
Overall, festive demand and GST 2.0 reforms have stimulated market activity, but affordability challenges and segment-specific competition continue to shape the automotive landscape in India.
