When Priya Sachdev & Vikram Chatwal's Big Fat Wedding Ended In Divorce: “My In-Laws Apologised”
The legal battle over late Sunjay Kapur’s Rs 30,000 crore estate has intensified further, with Karisma Kapoor’s children accusing stepmother Priya Sachdev of forging a will. Priya Sachdev, the wife of Kapur at the time of his death, is embroiled in controversies, as even her mother-in-law, Rani Kapur, has raised objections. But some of you would be surprised to hear that Priya Sachdev was also married once before tying the knot to Sunjay. This was her second marriage.
Before marrying Sunjay Kapur in 2017, Priya Sachdev was married to Indian-American actor-hotelier Vikram Chatwal. She has a daughter with him, Safira. Priya's marriage with Vikram ended in a divorce in 2011. Safira, their daughter from the marriage, was later adopted by Sunjay Kapur.
Months before Kapur’s death, Priya had given an insight into why her marriage with Vikram Chatwal crumbled. Speaking on the YouTube channel Kin and Kindness, she said, “My ex-husband ticked all the boxes… He went to Wharton, worked at Morgan Stanley. I did mathematics at UCLA, a double major with UCLA and LSE... So I thought this is a perfect match… You know, how you do your career path, but it doesn't always work. I thought I had it all right... But I guess I chose wrong,” she said.
Early on in her pregnancy, Priya Sachdev said she had an inkling that this marriage isn’t going to work. “When I had her (Safira) and I realised, a few 15 to 20 weeks into my pregnancy, I realised this marriage is not right. But I still continued to make this work,” she recalled.
She also spoke about navigating parenthood across generations. Her youngest son is Azarias, who is six years old. “It's very challenging. Like I have to take care of a 20-year-old, an 18-year-old, a 15-year-old (very temperamental, raging hormones, mood swings) and a six-year-old also. The older kids have become more like friends to the parents. So, parenting has been stopped. Yes, there are boundaries. We have set a sort of value system and asked them you have to respect it. They do. They are well grounded, humble.”
The wedding of Priya Sachdev and Vikram Chatwal has often been referred to as the OG Big Fat Indian Wedding. It was held over 10 days across Bombay, Udaipur and New Delhi, and saw the who's who of Indian and international politics, showbiz and fashion in attendance.
