12 killed, several injured in Mexico mass shooting during religious gathering

PTC News Desk: At least 12 people were killed and several injured overnight in Mexico state of Guanajuato when gunmen opened fire during a religious gathering. 


People were dancing and drinking in the street in celebration of St. John the Baptist when the shooting began. Revelers screamed and ran to escape the gunfire, according to videos circulated online.



Rodolfo Gómez Cervantes, an official in Irapuato during a media briefing confirmed that the death toll had risen to 12. The Guanajuato state prosecutor’s office reported that among the dead were a 17-year-old, eight men, and two women.


Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the attack and said an investigation is underway. "It is very unfortunate what happened. An investigation is underway," she said.
