Five Covid-19 deaths in a day: 2-year-old from Mohali the youngest victim

CHANDIGARH: The new coronavirus continued its deathly run on Friday, killing three people in the city and one each in Mohali and Ambala.


A 77-year-old resident of Sector 45 and an 82-year-old from Sector 7 breathed their last at the Covid hospital in Sector 48. The Sector 45 resident was tested positive on August 1 at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32.

He had diabetes and hypertension and was on oxygen support. He had a cardiac arrest at 2.30am on Friday, said a hospital spokesman.



The 82-year-old was tested positive on July 24. He was admitted to GMCH with complaints of chest pain and breathlessness. He had suffered pulmonary tuberculosis and had diabetes. He was shifted to the Sector 48 hospital on July 27. He had suffered acute respiratory infection. On August 6, he was intubated and put on ventilator.

The third victim was a 62-year-old resident of Sector

39. He was declared brought dead at Government Multispecialty Hospital, Sector 16, on August 6. He later tested positive. The deaths pushed the city toll to 23.

In Mohali, a two-year-old child from Phase VIII died of Covid-19 on Friday. He was under-treatment at GMCH for last six days, said civil surgeon Dr Manjit Singh. The victim was the youngest among the 18 patients to succumb to the virus — the last one was 17 years old. The eldest to die of Covid-19 was an 82-year-old Kharar resident. Deputy commissioner Girish Dayalan said considering the continuous surge in cases, the administration has put ‘Covid Spike Management Plan’ into action.

Ambala reported its 19th Covid death on Thursday night, with a 66-year-old man losing the battle at PGI, Chandigarh. “The resident of Milap Nagar, Ambala city, was a patient of psoriasis and skin disease. There was a positive patient at his residence too but he did not take treatment despite symptoms. He first came to the civil hospital, Ambala city, and was referred to PGI, Chandigarh, in a serious condition,” said civil surgeon Dr Kuldeep Singh.
