Five Manipur cops suspended for 'torturing drug peddler'

IMPHAL: Five Manipur policemen, including a sub-inspector, have been suspended on charges of allegedly torturing a suspected drug peddler in custody.

The victim, identified as Ginlam Munluo aka Ginzalam (40) of Singngat sub-division in Churachandpur district , was found hanging inside a cow shed on Sunday.

Locals alleged that Munluo, who was released the previous day, committed suicide after being tortured by police.

Sources said SP (Churachandpur) Amrita Sinha had on Sunday suspended a sub-inspector, an assistant sub-inspector and three constables of Singngat Police Station on charges of dereliction of duty and grave misconduct. A departmental inquiry has been initiated against the five, the sources added.

Soon after Munluo was found hanging, irate locals had stormed the Singngat Police Station demanding action against the guilty police personnel. As a token of protest, women had staged a roadblock in the area. The post mortem report is awaited to ascertain the cause of Munluo's death.
