Gangster held for extortion call

New Delhi: Two months after a city businessman received a Rs two crore extortion call , the Crime Branch has arrested gangster Salman Ghori.

According to additional commissioner (crime) Sanjay Bhatia, Ghori is behind a spate of threat-and-firing incidents on businessmen in the last few months and is named in 25 FIRs of murder, attempted murder, extortion, and other crime.

A close aide of gangster Neeraj Bawana, Ghori had been in jail since 2019. Booked under MCOCA, he came out on parole on pretext of his father’s treatment.

In Jan 2019, Ghori had sent his shooter to kill a businesswoman who refused to pay 'protection money'. The 55-year-old woman was shot in the head at her home.

A few months later, Ghori was shot in the leg during an encounter. Around 20 rounds were fired from both sides and many illegal weapons and vehicles were seized. Ghori, a resident of Meerut, had freed Neeraj's close gangster Amit Bhura from the custody of Uttarakhand Police in Dec 2014. In the melee, he had escaped with the police's AK47 rifle.

"This time, we received inputs about his presence in an apartment in Karampura area and cornered him. Two pistols, three magazines and 12 live cartridges have been recovered from him," additional CP Bhatia said.
