Gen Z in India Charting New Career Paths Amidst Economic Challenges: Pearson Survey

In the face of an ever-evolving economic landscape and challenging work environments, a significant portion of India's Gen Z workforce is reevaluating their career trajectories. They're investing in acquiring new skills and education, not only to ascend in their current careers but also to explore fresh job prospects.


According to insights from the Pearson Skills Outlook Survey – Employee View, it's evident that Gen Z in India is displaying a proactive approach towards seeking new employment opportunities, contrasting with Gen X while exhibiting a more subdued optimism regarding the job market compared to millennials.



The survey data paints a striking picture: a whopping 88% of Gen Z professionals in India have revisited their career choices due to the uncertainties of the past three years. This percentage significantly surpasses the 67% reported among millennials and the 55% among Gen X counterparts facing the same conundrum.

These shifts in career paths can be attributed to various factors, with a common theme being the aspiration for improved remuneration, enhanced flexibility, and an overall better work-life balance. Individuals are actively investing in their personal growth through training and education, an essential step in ensuring their readiness for the challenges of the future. The rise of automation and artificial intelligence has made several conventional job roles obsolete, prompting Gen Z professionals to contemplate emerging career avenues.


The Pearson Survey underscores the pivotal role that education and training play in career advancement. Gen Z individuals acknowledge that honing their skills through additional education or training programs enhances their marketability and equips them to thrive in an ever-evolving job market. Language learning programs and short courses are the preferred modes of education for Indian workers seeking to bolster their expertise.

This comprehensive report, involving 4,000 participants across four countries (the US, UK, India, and Brazil), illustrates a universal preference for short courses, employer-sponsored training, and university degrees as the most desirable paths for career advancement. In India, certifications from professional organizations (34%) and platforms (34%) rank highest in terms of educational pursuits, signaling that employers offering certifications are viewed as more attractive to the workforce.

The study unequivocally establishes upskilling as a top priority for employees. An impressive 75% of Indian employers offer opportunities for upskilling or reskilling as part of their benefits package, and nearly 92% of eligible workers take advantage of this. This trend reflects the belief held by Indian workers that tech-focused skills open the door to new opportunities and industries.

In terms of skill development, Indian workers are presently focusing on teamwork, problem-solving, and data processing. Looking ahead, they aspire to acquire competencies in coding, programming, artificial intelligence, problem-solving, and data processing.


The survey also underscores the significance of language acquisition in career advancement. An overwhelming 82% of Indian workers believe that learning a new language can bolster their career prospects. Among them, 85% recognize the value of enhancing their English skills, viewing it as a prerequisite for better career opportunities.

The preference for short courses as an educational modality emerges as a clear preference among workers, setting the tone for future learning opportunities.

The study's findings illuminate a concerted effort by Gen Z in India to enroll in skill-based programs, making themselves more marketable and employable in an environment increasingly centered around technology. They are actively pursuing tech-based skills, both independently and through employer-provided programs, recognizing their significance in India's emerging industries.

Moreover, the Pearson survey unveils the conviction shared by 84% of Indian workers that some form of university education is essential for securing good jobs and building successful careers. Gen Z, in particular, displays a strong willingness to pursue higher education to enhance their job prospects. Notably, 88% of Indian workers are presently learning or planning to acquire new skills or enroll in educational programs, all with the overarching goal of augmenting their careers and securing more promising job opportunities.

Employers have acknowledged the pivotal role of higher education and skills development in aiding employees' career progress and are actively involved in training initiatives. Embracing change and committing to continuous learning is becoming increasingly instrumental for individuals navigating these uncertain times, positioning themselves for long-term success.
