Captain America Actor Chris Evans On MCU Comeback: 'Never Say Never,' but Timing Is Key
Actor Chris Evans has addressed recent rumors about his potential return as Steve Rogers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe ( MCU ), stating that he remains uninformed about any such plans.
Despite portraying Captain America in the past, Evans seemingly bid farewell to the role in 2019 following the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame. Speculation has arisen about a possible Avengers movie reuniting the original cast, including Evans as Captain America. However, during an appearance on The View, Evans dismissed these rumors, asserting that Marvel Studios has not contacted him about a potential return.
“You know, I always see those reports too, and it’s news to me,” Evans commented on the rumors. “I think every couple of months, someone says that they’re getting Downey, and Hemsworth , and Scarlet [Johansson], and everyone’s coming back! ... [But] no one’s spoken to me about it. And look, I would never say never, but I really — I’m very protective. It’s a very precious role to me, so it would have to be just right.”
While the MCU has moved forward with Anthony Mackie taking on the mantle of Captain America in the upcoming sequel Captain America: Brave New World, the possibility of Evans making a special appearance has not been ruled out. Evans himself has indicated a willingness to consider a return, acknowledging that there may be more stories to tell about Steve Rogers. In an earlier statement to Variety , he expressed that the timing "doesn't quite feel right now," but he remains open to the idea, emphasizing the importance of doing justice to the character.
"It's tough, because look, I love that role deeply," Evans explained, expressing concern about potentially tarnishing his portrayal. "He means so much to me, and I really do. I think there's more Steve Rogers stories [to] tell, sure. But at the same time, I'm very, very precious with it… it's like this little shiny thing that I have that I love so much, and I just don't want to mess up in any way, and I was a part of something that was so special for the special period of time and in a way, it really landed so well."
As for Evans's upcoming projects, he recently co-starred with Emily Blunt in Netflix's Pain Hustlers and is set to appear alongside Dwayne Johnson and J.K. Simmons in the Christmas-themed action movie Red One.
