RM released his first solo mixtape, RM, in 2015, followed by his second mixtape, Mono, in 2018. The latter achieved significant success, peaking at number 26 on the Billboard 200 and marking the highest-charting album by a Korean soloist in the United States up to that time. RM made his official solo debut in 2022 with the release of his studio album Indigo, featuring notable contributions from Erykah Badu and Anderson .Paak. The album soared to number three on the Billboard 200, establishing a new record as the highest-charting album by a Korean soloist of all time. RM adopted the moniker "Rap Monster" during his trainee days, inspired by a song he wrote that referenced San E's "Rap Genius". The decision to use this name was driven by its perceived coolness, although RM has expressed mixed feelings about it, recognizing that it wasn't chosen for its deep personal significance.
