Greece Turns Orange: Sahara Dust Paints Athens City Skyline | VIDEO

Greece's sky turned orange on Tuesday and it appeared as if the Southeast European country was painted. The Sahara dust coming from North Africa completely transformed the skyline of Athens into a vibrant orange. The wave of dust began yesterday and was forecasted to peak today.

Pictures from the Greek capital showed the city engulfed in stifling dust clouds blown across the Mediterranean Sea from North Africa. The residents of Athens were seen flocking to the Acropolis hill, Lycabettus hill area, the Acropolis, and other landmarks of the ancient city in the evening.

Due to gusts moving southwards while accompanying dust from the Sahara Desert, the atmosphere of the Greek capital city appeared as if it was under a Martian-like filter, reported news agency Associated Press. The orange colour peaked in the last hours of daylight.

The weather in the European country is expected to become better in the coming days. The skies above Athens and other major urban centers are predicted to clear on Wednesday. As the temperature drops, winds are going to turn further south, moving the dust. More than 20 degrees Celsius higher than what was recorded in most of northern Greece, the daily high in some areas of the southern island of Crete reached 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit).
