HC adjourns bail plea of alleged woman maoist

Madurai: The Madras high court has adjourned the bail plea of an alleged woman maoist in a case which was registered against her in Dindigul district.

Sivasakthi alias Shenbagavalli alias Rama alias Kanimozhi, a resident of Krishnagiri district in her petition stated that according to the prosecution, on April 19, 2008, police officials received information that maoists were conducting arms training camp inside the forest areas of Kodaikanal.

When they went to the spot, the maoists opened fire and when the police retaliated, a maoist was shot dead. Sivasakthi said that seven people were accused in the case registered by the Kodaikanal police and it was alleged that she was also one of the participants in the camp.

She submitted that she hails from a reputed family and was not involved in any alleged offences. Though she had belief in marxist ideology for a very short period, she returned back to normal life with her family and was not involved in any offence as alleged by the prosecution.

The woman added that police implicated her in the case based on confessional statements and there are no other materials pointing out to her involvement in the case. Stating that she is in judicial custody since March 21, 2018, she moved the high court Madurai bench seeking bail.

When the case was taken up for hearing on Tuesday, justice G R Swaminathan adjourned the case to a further date for hearing.
