HC issues notice after mangroves cleared for cricket ground

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat high court on Friday issued notice to the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) and Amreli district authorities over a PIL taking exception to removing mangroves to prepare a cricket ground on the seashore of Jafrabad . The PIL was filed by one Haresh Bambhania from Jafrabad complaining that a few days ago earthmovers were deployed to remove mangroves and to clear the place in Dec 2023 and a cricket pitch has come up in the area.

This is not permissible under the environmental laws as the area falls in the coastal regulation zone (CRZ). The petitioner’s counsel submitted that when the mangroves were removed to make a cricket ground, the petitioner made a complaint before the mamlatdar and the issue was taken up by the officer before the district collector. However, nothing happened thereafter. On the submission that the area falls in the CRZ-1 category, the bench of Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Aniruddha Mayee sought a reply from GPCB and the district authorities. tnn
