Ricky Ponting Discusses Virat Kohli's Emotional Reaction to IPL Victory
Ricky Ponting, the head coach of Punjab Kings and a former Australian cricket captain, expressed his deep sentiments regarding Virat Kohli's emotional reaction following the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's historic IPL title win. The moment of victory saw Kohli overwhelmed with tears, kneeling after the final delivery. Ponting remarked that Kohli's display of emotion was a powerful reflection of the years filled with pressure, passion, and perseverance that led to clinching the IPL trophy for the first time, a title that had eluded both Kohli and the franchise since the league's inception in 2008.
“You could see the tears in his eyes during that last over; it signifies so much to the players and everyone involved,” Ponting shared with the media after the match.
“Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians have won multiple titles, but winning this tournament is no easy feat. It requires deep thought and commitment,” he added.
The final match, held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, concluded with RCB securing a thrilling six-run victory over Punjab Kings. Kohli's emotional outburst was not merely about winning; it represented a release after nearly two decades of being the face of the franchise and experiencing numerous near victories.
Ponting, who has led some of the most successful teams in cricket history, recognized the emotional significance of franchise success. He also supported Kohli's honest perspective regarding its importance in the grand scheme of things. Kohli mentioned in his post-match interview that while the IPL championship is a significant achievement, it ranks “five points below Test cricket” in terms of personal pride. Ponting agreed, emphasizing that playing for one's country in Test cricket is the highest honor, yet he praised Kohli's unwavering commitment to RCB and the significance of this long-awaited victory for both the player and the franchise.
“I consider myself one of the biggest purists of the game still active. Whether coaching or commentating, my first love remains Test match cricket,” Ponting stated.
“However, I completely understand what he means... this experience is as close as I can get to playing a Test match again.”
