Royal Enfield Temporarily Halts Scram 440 Sales Due to Engine Fault: Here's What We Know

Hero Image

New Delhi, May 6 Just months after its official market debut, Royal Enfield has suspended sales of the Scram 440 due to a critical engine component fault. The issue lies in a part known as the “Woodruff key”, which plays a crucial role in the bike’s ignition system. The company confirmed a temporary hold on deliveries, with a resolution expected in the coming weeks.

What’s the Issue with the Scram 440?

The problem involves the engine’s magneto assembly, particularly the Woodruff key, which helps secure rotating parts to the crankshaft. A defect in this component has led to starting issues, where affected units reportedly fail to restart after being turned off.

This fault surfaced in the early production batch of motorcycles delivered since January 2025, just weeks after the Scram 440’s high-profile unveiling at Motoverse 2024 and its launch in November 2024 at a starting price of ₹2.08 lakh (ex-showroom).

Scram 440: Key Highlights and Market Positioning

The Scram 440 is positioned as a modern, entry-level adventure-tourer, building upon the foundation of the Scram 411. Notable upgrades include:

  • 443cc air-cooled, single-cylinder engine

  • Output: 24.6 bhp and 34 Nm of torque

  • 6-speed gearbox (a first for the Scram lineup)

  • Alloy wheels and refreshed colour options

With the Royal Enfield Himalayan moving upmarket, the Scram 440 was aimed at riders seeking a lighter, more accessible ADV option.

Rectification and Next Steps

A Royal Enfield spokesperson told HT Auto:

“We are currently experiencing a delay in the deliveries of the Scram 440. Our teams are actively working to resolve the situation and expect to resume deliveries soon.”

  • Replacement components have been dispatched to Royal Enfield service centres for affected units.

  • No injuries or safety incidents have been reported in relation to the fault.

  • Deliveries and bookings remain paused, with expected resumption tentatively set for June 2025.

Customer Advisory
  • Existing owners of the Scram 440 are advised to visit authorised service centres for inspection and, if required, component replacement.

  • New buyers can monitor updates on Royal Enfield’s website or social media channels for booking resumption notifications.

Industry Outlook

This is a rare instance of a mechanical recall for Royal Enfield, which has otherwise maintained a strong reputation for robust motorcycles. However, given the Scram 440’s role in tapping the mid-range ADV segment, resolving this issue swiftly is critical to maintaining brand trust and customer confidence.
