Hoshiarpur: Women voters unhappy with absence of elected representatives

HOSHIARPUR: Women voters of many villages in Chabbewal are not amused with the “absence of the MP and the MLA”. They accuse the two politicians of betraying their trust.

BJP’s Vijay Sampla was elected MP from Hoshiarpur in 2014 and Congress’s Raj Kumar Chabbewal was elected MLA from Chabbewal constituency in 2017.

Both the leaders and their parties are at the receiving end of the women’s ire. Of 1,60,485 voters in Chabbewal, 77,126 are women.

A large number of women voters had gathered at village Bhungarni and Rajpur Bhayian for public meetings of SAD-BJP candidate Som Parkash to air their grievances. Disenchanted with broken promises, many of them expressed disinterest in exercising their franchisee.

“What is the point in voting when we have to run after them for same issue year after year?” said 65-year-old Raj Rani. Sharing the problems of the area, another local resident Manjinder Kaur said that large number of villages were facing problems pertaining to water supply which has not been resolved. She said that a promised was made for installing two tubewells in Rajpur Bhayian village but never fulfilled. “We get water supply at 1am, that too not regularly,” rued Manjinder.

Kamaljit Kaur of nearby village said that they had been complaining about poor drainage system for past many years. “Sampla never visited the village in last five years, while Dr Chabbewal came just once after getting elected in 2017,” she added.

Sarpanch of Rajpur Bhayian Manjit Singh told BJP candidate Som Parkash that people of the constituency had high hopes from him and he should fulfil all the promises after getting elected. Sensing the seriousness of the issue, the Phagwara MLA assured women voters attending his public meeting of resolving all the pending issues.
