Huzurnagar bypoll: Congress fails to get main Opposition party status

HUZURNAGAR: Congress lost an opportunity to stake claim of the main opposition party status in Telangana assembly. The grand old party’s defeat in Huzurnagar bypoll has left it with only six MLAs on its side. The assembly speaker had allotted the main opposition party seats in the House to MIM, a friendly party of TRS following defection of 12 of 19 Congress MLAs to the ruling TRS.

MIM has seven legislators.

The resignation of Uttam Kumar Reddy from Huzurnagar seat left Congress with six MLAs. Congress was planning to seek back opposition status by winning Huzurnagar seat as its MLAs’ tally would have gone up to seven. Based on vote percentage, Congress planned to ask the speaker to give back its main opposition party status. However, Congress’ hopes have been dashed with the thumping win of TRS nominee S Saidi Reddy.
