In water-deficit Jind, 200 fines for wastage of water

Jind: The public health and engineering department has served 200 notices at Jajwan village in Jind district for leaving taps open, as part of its drive to conserve water and stop wastage. The officials will also serve notices to 100 residents of Khapad.

According to official data, there are 1.31 lakh households in the district and 1.01 lakh tap connections.

Department employees visited around 60,000 households and 30-40% taps were running.

The department has initiated action against such consumers under Swachh Bharat Mission. The officials had told consumers that their water connections would be discontinued within a week if they do not fix the leaking taps.

Talking to TOI, public health and engineering department district consultant Randhir Matana said, “We have asked consumers not to let taps run unattended or be ready to face action. We can discontinue their water connections or lodge FIRs against them. We have found that in every village people leave 30-40% tap open. So, we have taken action against such offenders. At some places, people have increased the diameter of taps to two inches, whereas the standard size is half an inch. Lot of water gets wasted due to oversized taps,” he said.
