Iron Rod Collapses at Howrah Stn, Many Injured

Howrah: A woman has been hospitalised on suffering injuries after an iron rod from platform ceiling fell on her head at Howrah railway station on 20 May.

The mishap occurred around 7.40 Monday morning and the injured woman, Basura Begum of Purba Keshabpur village in Hooghly, is now undergoing treatment at Eastern Railway’s BR Singh Hospital at Sealdah.

Basura was standing at the front-end of platform 1 and 2 as her son Bapi Chand had gone to buy tickets for their journey to Hooghly. Suddenly, an iron angle rod from the ceiling came crashing on her head. She fell on the platform floor. Within a short while, the railway staff took the woman to Howrah General Hospital, where she has received four stitches in the injured area of her head. She was admitted to the female surgical ward for follow up treatment.

Later, a team of railway doctors went to the hospital and Basura was relocated to BR Singh Hospital at Sealdah for necessary investigations, including C.T. Scan. Ishaq Khan, the Howrah divisional railway manager, has ordered a probe into the mishap and instructed the concerned staff to undertake a round-the-clock check of Howrah station building to negate a repeat of this.
