June 2020 festival calendar: From Ganga Dussehra to Jagannath Rath Yatra, check out the list of important days

India is a land of festivals, and every region has something specific to its cultural and spiritual practices. The Gregorian month of June is full of auspicious days for people belonging to the Hindu fold. From Ganga Dussehra to Nirjala Ekadashi, Jyeshtha Purnima Vrat to Mithuna Sankranti, and Ashadha Navratri to Jagannath Rath Yatra, check out all the festivals.

June 1 - Ganga Dussehra

The holy river Ganga descended from heaven on the tenth day in the month of Jyestha, Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the Moon). Therefore, it is the day when Ganga made her presence felt on Earth for the first time.

June 2 - Gayatri Jayanti and Nirjala Ekadashi

Gayatri Jayanti falls on Shukla Paksha, Ekadashi in the month of Jyeshtha, and it marks the birth of Goddess Gayatri, the Mother of all the four Vedas. 

It is the same day, when devotees of Lord Vishnu observe Nirjala vrat, meaning a vrat without the consumption of food as well as water.

June 5 - Jyeshtha Purnima Vrat and Kabirdas Jayanti

The Purnima Tithi or the Full Moon day is considered very auspicious for doing Satyanarayan Puja. It is on this day, in the month of Jyeshtha, the famous Bhakti cult poet, Kabir Das was born.

June 6 - Upachhaya Chandra Grahan

Astronomy enthusiasts will look forward to the Penumbral Lunar eclipse on June 6, 2020. But the eclipse may not appear to the naked eye. Such eclipses are called Upacchaya.

June 14 - Mithuna Sankranti

Mithuna Sankranti marks the beginning of the third Solar month in Hindu calendar. The other festivals in the Hindu calendar are followed as per the Lunar calendars.

June 21 - Surya Grahan

Several cities in India will witness the annual Solar eclipse of June 21, the longest day in the year. The rules of Grahan shall be applicable since it will be visible.

June 22 - Ashadha Navratri begins

Apart from Chaitra and Sharadiya Navratri, people also celebrate Ashadha Navratri which falls in June, a month that sees the commencement of the monsoon season. The Ashadha Navratri of 2020 shall begin on June 22. These nine days are dedicated to Goddess Durga.

June 23 - Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra

The world-famous Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra shall begin on June 23. As per the Hindu calendar, it commences on Dwitiya Tithi, Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashadha.
