Kaithal man, son killed as wrong side driver causes car crash

AMBALA: The world of a family returning home to Kaithal after attending a wedding in Zirakpur came crashing down after two of its members were killed owing to the fault of a man driving his car on the wrong side here in the early hours of Saturday.

Vineet Thareja (35) and his son Dhairya Thareja (8) of Ashoka Garden Colony, Kaithal, lost their lives after the car (Maruti Swift) hit their vehicle (Maruti Alto) in a hit-and-run near Kakru village within the limits of Baldev Nagar police station in Ambala district around 1.30am.

Sources said Vineet used to run a scrap metal business in Kaithal.

Nisha, Vineet’s wife and a private school teacher, said, “We had gone to Zirakpur to attend a relative’s wedding on July 12. On the way back, my husband was driving the car. I was sitting along with him on the front seat, Dhairya, my daughter Mehak, and niece were sleeping on the rear seats. Around 1.30 am, when we reached near Kakru village, a rashly driven Maruti Swift car on the wrong side rammed into our car. Vineet lost control of the vehicle and it collided with the bridge’s concrete protection.” “Vineet’s head hit the steering and Dhairya received injuries on his head. Both fell unconscious. I called for help and informed my relatives. The accused driver stopped at some distance and then sped away,” she said. All of them were taken to Ambala City civil hospital, from where the doctors referred them to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32. Both Vineet and Dhairya succumbed to their injuries there.

The police registered a case against the unknown driver under sections 279 (rash driving) and 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code to start the investigation at Baldev Nagar police station.

ASI Sambhu Lal in-charge Baldev Nagar police post said, “The victim’s wife noted down the registration number of the vehicle driven by the accused. The vehicle belongs to a resident of Ambala. Further action will be taken as per the investigation. The post-mortem of the victims have been conducted in Chandigarh and the bodies handed over to family members.”
