Landslides, floods wreak havoc in Karnataka; Udupi, Dakshina Kannada brace for another bout of torrential rain

Bengaluru: The incessant rainfall and thunderstorms have rattled the state of Karnataka, along with neighbouring states of Kerala and Mumbai. Landslides and floods have continued to wreak havoc in most parts of Karnataka, especially the coastal areas, after being battered by torrential downpours.

Many areas of northern interior parts of the states, and regions like Malenadu, have also been affected by the deluge. Most rivers in these areas are flowing above the danger level due to the incessant rainfall in catchment areas, and there have also been reports of landslides in hilly swathes of Kodagu and Chikmagalur.

Border regions such as Belagavi district are also witnessing rising water levels in River Krishna and its tributaries as a result of heavy downpour in Maharashtra and subsequent inflow of water from dams there.

Along with that, rains and floods have also inundated low lying areas and cropland in several regions of Karnaraka.

Uttara Kannada and Shivamogga are some of the districts that have borne the brunt of nature. To add to the miseries, water is also being released from several dams into the state, including in areas such as Alamatti and Kabini. The Tungabhadra dam in Hosapete has also reached its optimum capacity, and it could spell doom in the days to come as well.

There have also been reports of landslides and slush near Botlappa and other areas of Kodagu, along with Charmadi ghat near Chikmagalur and Dakshina Kannada.

“Widespread moderate to heavy rains associated with strong surface winds & scattered very heavy to extremely heavy rains likely over Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada districts,” the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre has said in its forecast for tomorrow.

The Cauvery river too is overflowing and its floodwaters have inundated the Bhagamandala temple, blocking major connecting roads in the district.
