Supreme Court Bar Association to reopen Advocates chambers on Odd-Even basis from May 26

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has informed that Advocates chambers will be opened on an Odd-Even basis starting from today, i.e., May 26, according to Bar and Bench.

A circular issued to this effect also informs that Odd Number Chambers would be open on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and, that Even Number Chambers would be open on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

The chambers would be open on these days from 10 am to 4 pm, except on Saturdays, when the chambers would be open from 10 am to 2 pm.

Navlakha sent in JC by Mumbai court in Maoist links case

A special NIA court in Mumbai sent civil rights activist Gautam Navlakha, arrested in the Elgar Parishad-alleged Maoist links case, in judicial custody till June 22.

He surrendered before the National Investigation Agency in Delhi last month. The agency brought him here on Tuesday.

He would be lodged at Taloja jail near Mumbai.

Navlakha and several other civil liberties activists have been booked under stringent provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for allegedly having Maoist links and conspiring to overthrow the government.

Pune police, which handled the case initially, had alleged that `inflammatory' speeches made at the Elgar Parishad meet on December 31, 2017, triggered caste violence at the Bhima-Koregaon war memorial in the district the next day.

40 children taken ill after having pani puri in Telangana

As many as 40 children were taken ill after eating pani puri in Adilabad town of Telangana on Monday night, officials said on Tuesday.

The children, aged aged 5-10 years, are undergoing treatment at Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in the town, about 300 km from Adilabad.

RIMS Director Balram Banoth said condition of two children was serious, but under control. "The children are out of danger. But it will take 24 hours for total improvement," he said.

According to the police, the children in Khurshid Nagar and Sundarayya Nagar areas had pani puri from a pushcart vendor. After some time they started vomiting and suffered diarrhea. They were rushed to the hospital. By 11 p.m, the number of ill children increased to 40.

AirAsia flight makes emergency landing at Hyderabad airport

An AirAsia India Jaipur-Hyderabad flight with 76 people onboard made an emergency landing at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, here on Tuesday, due to a technical issue.

An airline spokesperson said the VT-IXC, operating as i51543 from Jaipur to Hyderabad, encountered a technical issue and carried out a precautionary engine shut down. The aircraft, carrying 70 passengers and six crew, landed safely around 1.25 p.m.

"We are carrying out detailed inspection of the aircraft, having informed DGCA. We are assisting in the investigation to find the cause," the spokesperson said.

Woman constable commits suicide in Ludhiana

A 29-year-old woman constable allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at her home here on Tuesday, police said.

Kalamjit Kaur was taken to a private hospital where she was declared brought dead, they said.

Police Inspector Jarnail Singh said she was posted in the city traffic police squad.

Kalamjit and her husband had been living separately due to a dispute. The couple has two children.

Central Water Commission sounds flood alert for Assam

The Central Water Commission (CWC) of Jal Shakti Ministry on Tuesday issued a flood alert for the Brahmaputra river in three districts of Assam.

The India Meteorological Department had earlier on Tuesday also warned of extremely heavy rainfall in Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh.

Parts of Assam and neighbouring states have been receiving heavy rains since the super cyclone Amphan weakened last week.

According to Central Water Commission, flood warning has been sounded in Jorhat, Sonitpur, and Baksa districts.

Sensex surrenders early gains, ends 63 pts lower

Equity benchmark Sensex gave up all the day's gains to end 63 points lower on Tuesday as spiking number of COVID-19 cases in the country created an uncertainty about lockdown measures going ahead.

Rupee settles 29 paise higher at 75.66 against US dollar

The rupee appreciated 29 paise to close at 75.66 against the US dollar on Tuesday tracking weakness in the American currency, while easing of COVID-19 lockdown measures fuelled growth optimism.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 75.69, then gained ground and finally settled for the day at 75.66, registering a rise of 29 paise over its previous close.

On Friday, rupee had settled at 75.95 against the US dollar.

Forex market was closed on Monday for Id-Ul-Fitr.

During the trading session, the rupee witnessed an intra-day high of 75.62 and a low of 75.74.

5 killed after car falls into river in Jharkhand

Five persons, including a two-year-old girl, were killed after the car they were travelling in fell into a river in Jharkhand's Dhanbad district on Tuesday, police said.

The Kolkata-bound vehicle hit the divider on a bridge on National Highway 2 around 5 am and fell into the Khudia river. Four of a family, including the two-year-old girl, and the driver died on the spot, Govindpur police station in- charge Surendra Kumar Singh said.

Juvenile held for septuagenarian's murder in UP village

A juvenile has been held in connection with the murder of a septuagenarian farmer, whose son is a senior officer in the Defence Ministry, police said on Tuesday.

Greater Noida DCP Rajesh Kumar Singh said that Rajender Sharma, 75, was killed on Thursday night while he was asleep at a tube well in Issepur village.

The officer said the accused was a resident of Sikandrabad and used to visit the area for hunting partridges. The accused allegedly stabbed the septuagenarian with a knife and hit him with a brick to rob him of Rs 6,300.

Man kills elder brother in UP's Shamli

A 35-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by his younger brother in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district, police said on Tuesday.

According to police, incident took place at Unchagaon under Kairana Police Station in the district on Monday and was the fallout of a family dispute.

A case was registered against Satish Sharma for killing his brother Sanjay Sharma, police said.

In the FIR filed by their mother, it was alleged that the duo had a quarrel following which Satish Sharma thrashed Sanjay Sharma.

The accused is absconding, police said.

Man commits suicide upset over not getting work

A 35-year-old man, who was upset over not getting work, allegedly committed suicide by hanging from a tree, police said on Tuesday.

The body of Sitar Prajapati, a resident of Kamasin Road here, was found hanging from a tree near a pond on Monday afternoon, in charge of Oran police outpost Sultan Singh said.

Prajapati, who was a mason by profession, was tensed over his unemployment, his father Rameen said.

The body has been sent for post-mortem, the police official said.

Woman with 2 minor daughters murdered in UP district

A woman with her two minor daughters were found murdered on Tuesday morning in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao district.

The bodies of three were found on the banks of a dry pond in the Subhankheda Tikra village, the police said. The deceased woman has been identified as Sarojini and her two daughters are Shivani, 7, and Roshni, 5.

According to the police, all three were killed by strangulation and were then thrown on the banks of the pond.

Sarojini's husband Anantu and his brother have been taken into custody and the bodies have been sent for post-mortem.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Vikrant Veer and Additional SP Dhawal Jaiswal told reporters that initial evidences pointed to the involvement of the husband and his brother in the crime.

The dog squad and forensic expert team have also been called on the spot.

Fire breaks out at a footwear manufacturing factory in Keshavpuram area, Delhi

A fire broke out in a shoe factory in northwest Delhi's Keshavpuram on Tuesday morning, an official of the Delhi Fire Service said.

So far, no casualty has been reported in the incident, the official said, adding that the cause behind the blaze is yet to be ascertained.

A call about the fire was received at 8.34 am after which 23 fire tenders were rushed to the spot, said Atul Garg, Director of Delhi Fire Service.

In another incident, around 250 huts were gutted in a blaze that broke out in southeast Delhi's Tughlakabad village on late Monday night.

A massive fire broke out in the slums of South-East Delhi's Tughlakabad area on Monday night.

A call was received at 12.50 am and 28 fire engines were rushed to the spot, a fire department official said.

The police and fire department took out all the slum occupants in time even as most were fast asleep.

The fire was controlled at around 3:40 am, but around 1500 shanties were burnt, leaving Hundreds of people homeless. The government is currently assessing the loss.

After a day's lull, Pakistan again violates ceasefire on LoC

Pakistan army on Tuesday again violated the bilateral ceasefire on the Line of Control (LoC) by resorting to unprovoked shelling in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district.

Colonel Devender Anand, Defence Ministry spokesman, said: "Pakistan initiated unprovoked ceasefire violation by firing with small arms and intense shelling with mortars along the LoC in Balakote sector today."

"Indian army is retaliating befittingly," he added.

Pakistan has made a practice of violating ceasefire on the LoC as senior army officers hold that the same is done to facilitate infiltration of terrorists into the Indian side.
