Madras high court grants leave to slain maoist Manivasagam's widow, sister to attend his funeral

MADURAI: The Madras high court on Thursday granted leave to alleged maoists Chandra and Kala till November 17 evening to attend the funeral of Manivasagam, a maoist who was killed in a police encounter in Kerala. Kala is Manivasagam’s widow while Chandra is his sister .

As directed by the court earlier, the body of the slain maoist was brought to Salem and is kept in the mortuary of the Government Hospital there, said the counsel who appeared for the petitioner who sought parole for Kala and Chandra.

The petition was moved by S Anbarasan of Namakkal, who is a relative Manivasagam.

In his petition, Anbarasan stated that Manivasagam’s widow Kala and sister Chandra were lodged in the Trichy Central Prison as a case had been registered against them under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and sections of the IPC. Hence the petitioner moved the HC seeking 30 days’ parole for the duo to attend the funeral of Manivasagam.

A division bench of Justice S Vaidyanathan and Justice N Anand Venkatesh granted leave for Kala and Chandra till November 17 evening.
