Major police crackdown on illegal businesses in Guntur

GUNTUR: Police in Guntur district have launched a drive against organisers of gambling, betting and bootleggers as rural SP R Jayalakshmi has made it clear to all the Station House Officers (SHOs) that she will not spare laxity on the part of the officials.

The police across the rural district are cracking down on the anti-social elements by conducting raids.

The district police have registered as many as 82 cases against traders who were involved in sale and storage of gutka in the past one month. The police have also arrested nearly 150 people in connection with the illegal gutka sales.

Interestingly, Jayalakshmi assumed charge as the rural SP exactly 30 days ago and launched the crackdown right from the Day One.

“We can’t allow gambling houses and clubs as these practices are literally ruining hundreds of families. Similarly, belt shops were responsible for woes of women in rural areas. People involved in illegal activities will not be spared,” Jayalakshmi said.

She said that gutka, khaini were banned as they were causing irreparable loss to the health. She warned the traders not to indulge in such businesses as they would be sent to jail without any mercy.
