NAGPUR: The Nagpur unit of state anti-terrorist squad (ATS) has invoked the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA) against Ghugus-based Chandrapur district’s dreaded Shaikh Haji Shaikh Sarwar and his gang. This is the first action of local ATS under MCOCA.

Haji was nabbed by ATS in February this year for his alleged role behind inter-state arms dealing racket and also possible links with Maoists.

He was netted from a shrine near Girad at Yavatmal. ATS had also recovered a firearms from him.

Haji is already externed from Chandrapur but his illegal activities of supplying coal and firearms are learnt to be still operational from his dens in Ghugus .

In the present case, Haji's name had come to fore following the arrests of Sanjay Khade and the physically challenged Swaroop Singh from a train while returning from Bihar. ATS had also recovered two firearms and many ammunition from them in January this year.

Two more persons were subsequently arrested, including Jeetendra Singh Sajjan Singh from Wani in Yavatmal, for their close links with Haji. In Yavatmal district too, Haji enjoys vast domination spread over a wide network.
