MLA finds student washing dishes, assures to support edu

Mangaluru: In a benevolent act, Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai has assured to pay for a pre-university student’s entire higher education costs, after he found the latter washing dishes at a wedding in Udupi.

An intrigued Rai chose to go up to the young man washing dishes and ask about his situation. After finding out about the student’s financial difficulties, the MLA gave him his visiting card and left the wedding.

After two days, the student contacted Rai and after their discussion, the MLA decided to fund his studies.

Rai told TOI that the 16-year-old boy, despite being academically brilliant, faced financial constraints at home due to his father’s health issues. “Whenever I go for functions like marriages, housewarming ceremonies and pujas, I observe the surroundings. While washing my hands after eating, I observed the boy carrying and cleaning plates that were used by guests during the event. This sight saddened me deeply, prompting me to approach him and have a conversation. The boy’s father is unwell, his uncle has been providing support to the family. Understanding his circumstances, I requested him to contact me later,” he said.

Later, when the boy called, the MLA suggested to him that he should pursue an engineering course and agreed to cover all the expenses. “The boy told me that he wants to do BCom. Therefore, I reassured him that I would take care of all his educational expenses, such as books, uniforms, and hostel fees until he finishes his higher education. I also asked him to select the best college where he would like to pursue his education,” he said.

The MLA mentioned that he has been supporting the education of underprivileged children in Puttur and the nearby regions. “My only criterion is that those students, who deserve help should benefit. Therefore, in the majority of instances, I directly transfer the funds to the educational institutions. They should develop personally and scale great heights,” the MLA said.
