Mohali: Woman ends life, partner charged with rape

Mohali: A 20-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide after a man "raped her on the pretext of marriage" in Zirakpur on Tuesday.


Police said the woman and the accused, 23, a native of UP, were in a live-in relationship. "The accused was earlier her neighbour in Panchkula . They later moved to a house in Zirakpur," said a cop.

The woman's mother said in her police complaint, "My daughter had been missing since July 8. Early on Tuesday, she called me up saying she had returned home and may end her life as the accused had raped her on the promise of marriage. I rushed to her house, but the door was locked from inside. From a window, I saw her hanging from a ceiling fan."

Her mother called up the police. Investigating officer ASI Mangeram said, "After receiving a call around 7am, we reached the spot and broke open the house door. The complainant's daughter was hanging with a dupatta from a ceiling fan. No suicide note was found at the spot."

"The body will be handed over to the family after the post-mortem, which will ascertain if she was pregnant. A case has been registered against the accused under sections 306 (abetment to suicide) and 376 (punishment for rape ) of the Indian Penal Code . A manhunt has been launched to arrest him," the ASI added.
