Moisture incursion brings rain respite, NDA area gets 18.5mm

Pune: Several parts of Maharashtra, including Pune, witnessed thundershowers on Thursday, providing a brief respite from the scorching summer heat.

According to IMD data, the NDA area in Pune recorded the highest precipitation of 18.5mm till 5.30pm, followed by Lohegaon at 1mm and Koregaon Park, Shivajinagar, and Lavale at 0.5mm each in Pune city.

The unseasonal showers were due to moisture incursion caused by a cyclonic circulation over Madhya Maharashtra and a trough running from northwest Rajasthan to west Vidarbha in lower tropospheric levels, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated.

“Moisture incursion coupled with high temperatures led to cloud development and convective rainfall in parts of state,” an IMD official said.

Under the influence of this weather system, isolated to scattered rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms , lightning and gusty winds between 40-50kmph are very likely over Vidarbha, Madhya Maharashtra, and Chhattisgarh during May 10-13, and over Madhya Pradesh during May 9-11.

The IMD has also warned of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over isolated places in Vidarbha, with thundershowers also expected for Madhya Maharashtra till May 13. Hailstorm activity is very likely over Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha on May 10.

While Pune city can expect very light rains during May 11-14 as per the IMD forecast, other parts of state, such as Nagpur (50mm) and Chandrapur (32mm), also recorded significant rainfall on Thursday.

Incidents of tree falls

While rain brought the city’s heat quotient down, the inclement weather led to incidents of trees falling at over 17 locations, as per data from the fire brigade.

The affected areas include Sahakarnagar, Satara Road, Sinhagad Road, Shivajinagar, Model Colony, Bhavani Peth, FC Road, Kothrud, Karvenagar, and Pashan, among others.
