Mys airport sees fall in passenger numbers

Mysuru: As concerns mount over the declining passenger numbers at Mysuru Airport, it has prompted calls for urgent intervention from both state and central governments.

For example, April, which is a bustling month, witnessed a notable decrease in monthly passenger footfall. According to Airports Authority of India (AAI) data, April saw 3,071 departures and 3,552 arrivals across 120 flights, highlighting a stark decline compared to March 2024, which recorded 8,199 passengers.

According to (AAI) data, in April 2023, the airport had recorded 12,779 pax, while in April 2022 the airport had recorded a pax of 15,017. In April 2013, the airport recorded an aircraft movement of 292 while it was 358 in 2022.

With no direct flights to any of the major cities, stakeholders fear that the numbers may remain slow. They are demanding an extension of the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) to lure back travellers.

Currently, Mysuru airport has flights only to Chennai and Hyderabad. During it’s peak running period, five cities were connected from Mysuru and 14 aircraft flew (7 each of arrival and departure flights) daily from the airport.

According to AAI data, in February 2024, the airport recorded 3,989 passengers arriving, and 3,570 departures. In January 2024, the airport recorded a pax of 9,465 passengers. In December 2023, the airport had recorded a pax number of 9,495.

According to the stakeholders from the travel, and tourism sector, with the end of the Regional Connectivity Scheme, the bad days of Mysuru airport started.

“Till Mysuru is developed into an industrial and tourism hub, it is not easy to improve the air connectivity. The need of the hour is more investments in Mysuru, and fast development of the city,” explained a travel industry stakeholder.

Airport director Anoop JR said letters have been sent to all airlines that have ATR 72 flights to connect to Mysuru. “By the year end, we are hopeful of a new service,” he said.
